Heritage
Born from the serene waters of Lake Biwa, the birthplace of all freshwater pearls, each piece embodies a touch of cultural elegance and history. Biwa pearls, cherished for their unique luster and organic forms, have been a symbol of Japanese craftsmanship since Mikimoto Kokichi, a pioneering pearl farmer, brought his cultivation technique to Lake Biwa in the early 20th century. Over time, these pearls became highly sought after by jewelers and connoisseurs worldwide, with production peaking at 6 tons a year in the 1970s. Though the industry faced challenges due to pollution in the late 20th century, significant sustainability efforts have revitalized the lake, and 5 dedicated farmers have returned to continue this proud tradition.
Today, the production of Biwa pearls is limited to approximately 15 kilograms annually, making these gems exceptionally rare and precious. When you wear our handcrafted creations, you’re embracing a piece of tradition and artistry that has been passed down through generations.
